MIREMBE WAS BORN WITH A SIMPLE IDEA IN MIND: TO CREATE AN INCOME AND MOSTLY AN OPPORTUNITY FOR WOMEN WE VOLUNTEERED WITH IN UGANDA.
HOW? BY CREATING BEAUTIFUL FASHION ACCESSORIES THAT WOMEN WOULD HAPPILY PURCHASE.
We volunteered with women's groups through 'Brit - Ten', a volunteer and development center in Uganda. We discovered a country of beauty, a fascinating culture and a group of magnificent and warm women. The women were war refugees with a complicated past. Most of them single mothers, with no education and barely enough work. Surprisingly enough some were even our own age! They had a happiness within them about life and their resourcefulness and skill amazed us. We would teach the women Enligh, Mathematics and we also led empowering activities.
EVERY MEETING WAS FULL OF HUGS, SINGING, AND DANCING. THE MORE WE GOT TO KNOW THEM, THE MORE WE OPENED UP TO EACH OTHER AND HEARD THEIR STORES, DIFFICULTIES AND SUCCESSES.
We realized that the women create jewelry making using a traditional rolled paper technique, and we simply FELL IN LOVE! We bought ourselves, our families and friends tons of jewelry as souvenirs from our trip. And then it hit us like a stroke of lightning - these women have a skill, and this skill can be used as a way to drive them out of poverty. They would be able afford rent, be able to send their children to school, feed them nutritious food and even more! It would be amazing!
Sounds simple, right? We never imagined that this would be the beginning of a whirlwind of a journey!
We knew nothing about opening a non-profit. We filled our days with learning about business management, marketing, design and international development.
We decided on 2 main ideas. Firstly, we were determined to ensure that the products would be trendy and beautiful, thereby women would truly want to purchase them. Secondly, the women’s stories must be heard. Women around the world could identify with them, and be moved to take part in this trans-continental initiative to empower women, reduce economic gaps and reduce poverty.
We believe that with your cooperation, we can change and improve these women’s future, with the hope that this initiative can spread to even more women around the world.
Thank you for taking part in our journey!
Tamar, Inbar and Shirli.
